Hybrid Rice: The Future is Here
Advanta, a UPL Group company, provides a dynamic agro-based product is changing life for good – higher profits for farmers and quality rice for consumers
Mumbai, June 18, 2010: Advanta India Limited a United Phosphorous Limited (UPL) group company has taken a unique initiative that would impact the rice cultivation in India. Advanta has launched five hybrid rice seeds that would increase yield for the farmers and eventually increase their profits margins. As it is known, UPL is one of the top four generic agro-chemical giant in the world with around 800 quality products for farmers.
Vision 2020 envisages a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.3 per cent for rice production in India, with 2005 as the base year. The target for 2020 is 163 million metric tonnes (mmt). However, at the existing growth rate of 1.34% per annum, India will only achieve rice production of 106 mmt by 2020, a shortfall of nearly 60 mmt at the current productivity level. The only way to bridge this gap is hybrid rice that gives 1.5 metric tonnes/hectare yield. (Source: Planning Commission of India).
Rice is the most important crop in India and comprises 40 per cent of total food grain production. Hybridization technology is a major breakthrough and has the capability of dramatically improving the productivity from current low levels.
The five hybrids marketed by Advanta are PAC 801, PAC 807, PAC 832, Swarna 2 and PAC 837 (notified by the Govt.). These are soft, tender, with excellent taste and cooking quality and can adapt to specific local growing conditions. Farmers using these hybrid seeds are consistently getting more than 20 per cent yield advantage over the best performing high yielding varieties in the market.
